Former President Barack Obama said on Sunday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus despite feeling relatively healthy. His wife, Michelle Obama, tested negative.

“I have had a scratchy throat for a many days, but else I am feeling fine, “Obama twittered. “Michelle and I are thankful to have the vaccine and supporter shots.”

Obama has encouraged more Americans to get vaccinated against the coronavirus, even as infection rates in the U.S. have fallen. The average number of infections over the past week has been around 35,000, a sharp drop from an average of nearly 800,000 in mid-January.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 75.2 percent of U.S. adults were fully vaccinated, and 47.7 percent of those who were fully vaccinated received a booster shot. The CDC relaxed its indoor mask guidelines in late February with a more comprehensive approach, meaning the vast majority of Americans live in areas where indoor masks are not recommended in public.
